Residential complex Hannibal II
Vogelpothsweg 12–26, 44149 Dortmund
The Hannibal residential complex in the Dorstfeld district is even more polarising than its "little brother" in Dortmund's Nordstadt. Completed in 1975, the 17-storey complex comprises 412 apartments - 308 masionette apartments and 104 smaller apartments. The façade of the elongated structure is loosened up by staggered heights and recesses. The building is set back from the public road space, lower residential buildings are located in front of it. With the directly adjacent Dorstfeld-Süd S-train station, Hannibal is well connected to the public transport network.
Especially the bright maisonette apartments with large balconies and parking space in the underground garage were popular, modern, and progressive residential locations for the opening. After only a few years, however, the first structural defects became apparent, which were only inadequately eliminated by the owners who changed several times. The complaints of the tenants increased; the public perceived the complex as a "alien body" and a "social hotspot". The sad climax of the history of Hannibal II was in September 2017, when the building had to be vacated within a very short time due to fire protection deficiencies. Currently (as of May 2018) it is uninhabited, its future has not yet been clarified.
