If you would like to find out more about the building of the former Karstadt head office in Essen, you should make a note of 14 May 2019 in the calendar. On this day, BDA Essen invites those interested to take a tour of the building designed by Walter Brune in the 1960s, which was ahead of its time in many respects. Since 2015, the listed building complex has been renovated and converted by the Essen architects Koschany + Zimmer (KZA) according to specifications. KZA project manager Melanie Dreischer will guide the participants through the construction site for about an hour and a half, with a very special guest at her side: Walter Brune himself joins the tour and complements it with exciting building histories and memories. At the time, his open floor plans, floor-to-ceiling windows and ultra-modern technical solutions were convincing and caused a sensation not only among experts. Even today - 50 years after completion - the design is still modern and exemplary in many respects, says Dreischer. The concrete future plans of the building complex and their implementation will also be revealed during the tour.
The construction site tour starts at 6 p.m. at the main entrance of the Karstadt headquarters at Theodor-Althoff-Strasse 2, 45133 Essen, Germany. Participation in the guided tour is free of charge. Registration is not required.
