The architect Emil Steffann (1899-1968) is one of the most important church builders of his generation. With his studio, he built around 40 churches and monasteries in the short period between 1950 and 1968 - all developed from his individual task but still unmistakably following his architectural language.
To mark the 50th anniversary of his death, the Chair of Architectural History at RWTH Aachen University, in cooperation with the association "Dialograum Kreuzung an St. Helena", is organizing an evening of lectures in the Church of St. Helena in Bonn - and thus in a church building that was itself erected around 1960 according to a design by Emil Steffann and Nikolaus Rosiny.
Four short lectures recall the life, work and continued work of the architect. An examination of the handling of his church buildings against the background of the increasing change of use of church spaces establishes the relation to the present. In addition, a small exhibition presents numerous architectural models made by students of RWTH Aachen University that illustrate the central ideas of Emil Steffann's architecture.
