Eingebettet in das Grün des Kant-Parks liegt seit 1964 das Wilhelm-Lehmbruck-Museum, das seinen Namen dem aus dem Duisburger Stadtteil Meiderich stammenden Bildhauer verdankt. Als Sammlung für moderne Kunst mit Schwerpunkt auf Skulpturen des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde es ab 1956 im Auftrag des Stadt konzipiert. Den Auftrag erhielt Lehmbrucks Sohn Manfred, ein damals in Stuttgart ansässiger Architekt, der den Bau in drei Abschnitten – entsprechend den verschiedenen Funktionen des Museums – realisierte.
