St. Albertus Magnus

The ensemble of a catholic church and a parish centre in Bochum-Wiemelhausen was designed by Gottfried Böhm. Böhm is one of the most renowned German architects and mainly known for its sacral buildings. He works especially in the Rhineland, but also created several buildings in the Ruhr area, including the churches of Heilig-Geist, St. Engelbert and St. Matthias aswell as the community centre Auf der Höhe in Essen, St. Thomas Morus in Gelsenkirchen and the church of St. Joseph in Bochum.

Planning began in 1960 and was never fully completed. In particular, a tower in front oft he church was not realized. The building complex consists of interlocked cubes, which are staggered in height and follow a strict geometric order. They include the parsonage and a kindergarten next to the church.

The reinforced concrete structures are clad with bricks inside and outside. The building was completed in 1964. The original flat roofs were replaced by flat hipped roofs in 1987.

St. Albertus Magnus has been a listed building since 2007. In 2008 the church was taken out of use and profaned in 2014. Since then it has been used as a performance venue for the "TheaterTotal" youth theatre project. For this purpose, some structural adjustments such as a stage floor and a grandstand were made.
